Sarracenia (American Pitcher Plant)

The leaves of the pitcher plant are transformed into cup-shaped trapping organs that also serve a photosynthetic function. Their vivid coloration, along with nectar-producing glands on the outer surface of the pitcher, effectively lures insects into the deceptive trap. Once inside, the prey usually drowns in the liquid at the bottom of the pitcher, where digestion takes place. Pitcher plants stand out among carnivorous plants for their remarkable longevity: with proper care, they can live for well over a decade and often reach impressive sizes.
