Nepenthes (Pitcher Plant)

In pitcher plants, the organs responsible for capturing and digesting insects are leaves transformed into distinctive pitchers. Around the rim of the pitcher lies a collar lined with nectar-producing glands, whose sweet scent lures unsuspecting prey. Enticed by the nectar, an insect lands on the slippery surface, loses its footing, and falls into the pitcher’s interior, where it drowns in the fluid at the bottom. The presence of decomposing insect bodies against the inner walls of the pitcher stimulates the plant to produce digestive juices, breaking down the prey and allowing the nutrients to be absorbed.

The most popular and easy to care are hybrids of Nepenthes- Ventrata, Rob, Gentle, St Gaya, Bloody Mary, Sam, Rebecca Soper, Hookeriana, especially bred from hardy species such as ventricosa, maxima or sanguinea.
